Changing Careers When You’re Middle-Aged is Hard Because You Feel Like an Idiot
The thing about changing careers when you are the same age as someone who’s Googled “what is perimenopause” at 2am is that you go from having twenty years of experience—respectable! authority! title! boss!—to having zero experience (and zero clout)—all while your hormones are throwing furniture out the window like they’re quitting their job, too.
It’s a little like losing your virginity all over again.
Oh god, remember that?
Now that’s something to fear. If gas station soda bottles came with a warning label that said,
“⚠️ Caution: May cause lifelong blistering, 18 years of unpaid Uber driving, and $300,000 in expenses, not including emotional damage…”
…I’d sooner lick the floor of a Waffle House than put one of those to my lips.
ANYWAYYYYY.
Common wisdom always tells us that mid-life career changes are hard because we’re scared of change, but like... are we? Really?
If someone showed up tomorrow with a brand-new house, a brand-new car, and a brand-new passport, I wouldn’t be scared—I’d be halfway packed. I’d be peeling out of my driveway in a robe and Crocs, waving goodbye to my old LinkedIn bio like:
“So long, Janet from HR—I’m a goat farmer in Tuscany now.”
Scared of change? No, babes. I'm scared of staying exactly the same while my soul slowly shrivels like a baby carrot in the back of the fridge.
Changing careers when you’re middle-aged is hard, not because you’re scared, but because you feel like an idiot.
🤔 How many times have you tried to just MAKE A DECISION about your future life’s direction, but can’t?
🔫 How many times have you tried to just PULL THE TRIGGER on something new, but can’t?
💫 How many times have you swirled idea after idea after idea after idea around in your head, hoping to land on THE ONE, but…can’t?
It’s like playing Russian Roulette with a Nerf gun filled with mothballs, Bengay, and the voice of your mother asking if you’ve thought about going back to teaching.
You want to reinvent yourself. You want to try something new. But every idea feels either too exhausting, too big, too unknown, too hard, too much, too late, or too “influencer-y,” and suddenly you’re spiraling into an Etsy shop that sells artisanal moss.
Changing careers in mid-life isn’t about fear. It’s about decision fatigue, existential whiplash, and the paralyzing realization that you’ll have to explain your new job to someone who still thinks “freelancer” means unemployed.
In other words, ya feel like an idiot. 🤷♀️
You can’t figure your own self out.
And god, what a confidence downer, am I right???
Speaking of confidence downers, you’re also acutely aware of how uncool you have become, throughout the years, and therefore trying to ‘make your mark’ in a new industry when you can hardly make it to the toilet is, well, rather daunting.
(The other day while teaching a class online I literally thought I was going to have an accident in my pants. I can just hear it now: “Millennials turn to diapers in desperate attempt to stay online.”)
Those fresh-eyed rosy glasses we all once wore are now tinged with schmutz, and franky, it’s probably mold. Because mold is everywhere when you turn 40. Suddenly, you worry about mold like you used to worry about zits. Is there mold growing in the basement? Is there mold growing in the washer? Is there mold growing on my plants? Is there mold growing on my big—now sorta hairy?!—toe?
(Also, there IS mold growing on my new neon flash plants. I am about to go rambo. Send the authorities if you never hear from me again.)
A Gutsy Escape Plan for Your Mid-Life Career Crisis 🥷 🤺 ⚔️
So, what are we to do when we’re staring down the barrel of life and it’s yelling back to us, “Go get some new jeans, granny!”
I have some ideas.
- Stop talking yourself out of what you really want to do. 😰
You know what’s annoying? Being too smart for your own good. While I am SURE you could create the world’s most airtight argument for why, exactly, you should not do that thing you can’t stop thinking about, this isn’t about what’s “logical.” Dreams are not logical. Passion is not logical. Love is not logical. So stop trying to make them subject to logic. Can’t you see that by doing that, all you’re going to end up with is a job that makes sense on LinkedIn but makes you want to fake your own death every Monday morning. Seriously—just because it adds up doesn’t mean it lights you up. You’re not building a spreadsheet, you’re building a life. And this requires a change in approach. - You’ve just hired a website agency. They’re making you THE WORLD’S COOLEST WEBSITE. This is going to your new calling card. Your new debut. What do you actually want the website to be about, in your heart? 💓
I have a feeling it’s not really gonna be SEO. Or project management systems. Or quarterly tax prep. Or lead generation strategies. And, if you’ve gotta spend $20K on a website, you’re definitely going to make sure it’s one you actually want. One you’re excited about! Right? So…what’s the thing you’d actually be excited about??? - Remember: you’ve gotten this far in a career that doesn’t actually light you up. Imagine how far you’ll get with one that does. ⚡️
It’s tempting to think that you shouldn’t throw it all away; that your success to this point might have been a fluke, so hang onto it! Buuuuut, what got you here wasn’t a fluke, it was simply the output of consistent input. You grew your current career by showing up every day. There was no real magic to it. That’s just what happens when you do something regularly. (Please, somebody remind me this when it comes to exercise.) But, what if you did introduce some magic in the equation? What if you were crazy about what you were doing every day? What if you were a fanatic, in the best way? What kind of career chemical reaction would you have then??? Sometimes, you have to trust that magic follows magic. ✨ - Instead of feeling like a washed-up poser, think of yourself as a fucking revolutionary. ⚔
What guts you have, to do something so bold! What brilliance it is, that you advocated for yourself! What a turn-on it is, that you’re so self-assured! What an example you are, to not care what anybody thinks! (Even if you secretly do.) A reframe here can be the difference between feeling like a flighty, pathless, unmoored Pinterest board without a theme…and realizing you’re actually a badass phoenix in transitional sweatpants. You’re not lost—you’re molting. You’re not flaky—you’re trailblazing. You’re not too old or too late—you’re right on time for the part where the movie gets interesting. - Whatever you have done thus far in your life, is a gift. Use it. 🎁
It would be easy to imagine that you’re “throwing it all away” and “starting over,” but instead of picturing your career like a dry erase board you just wiped over with Clorox, try picturing it like a growing art board—one with infinite scroll. Everything you’ve done up to this point counts. Everything goes on your life’s resume. Everything stays on the board. And everything helps you in the future. Everything you have done??? Literally, everything??? Is an advantage. A secret weapon. A life-long superpower. Imagine how far ahead of the curve you will be in your new career, knowing what you DO know. Things that others don’t know. If you used to work in email marketing, just think about how bombass your email marketing will be. (And thus, put you far ahead of the game.) If you used to work as a journalist, just think about how much PR you’ll be able to get for yourself. If you used to work as a graphic designer, just think about how beautiful your new brand will be. You are not far behind—you are actually quite far ahead. You just didn’t see it that way. 🙂
So no, you’re not starting from scratch. You’re starting from experience. From taste. From wisdom. From gut-checks, gut-punches, and guts—period.
And that makes you unstoppable.
Because when someone starts something new in their twenties, it’s called ambition.
When someone starts something new in their forties? That’s called conviction.
You’re not reinventing yourself because you failed. You’re reinventing yourself because you evolved. Because you know better now. Because “fine” doesn’t cut it anymore. Because there’s a version of you out there that is thriving in a career that actually gives a shit back.
So go ahead. Make the leap. Build the neon website. Tell your story. Do the weird thing. Trust your feelings. And trust that you will always come out on top—not because you played it safe, but because you finally played it true.
With love, guts, and mold-fighting energy,
—Ash 🥷✨
